Angie Thomas’s THE HATE U GIVE has been honored with the 2019-2020 Louisiana Teen Readers’ Choice Award. Founded in 1999, the program’s purpose is to “foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books.” Balzer + Bray published the book on February 28, 2017.
Anne Boyer’s THE UNDYING was awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction. The Pulitzer Prize Board calls THE UNDYING “an elegant and unforgettable narrative about the brutality of illness and the capitalism of cancer care in America.” Farrar, Straus and Giroux published the book on September 17, 2019.
Parade published a wonderful profile of former Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief and current Project Runway judge Elaine Welteroth, whose NYT-bestselling memoir MORE THAN ENOUGH launched in paperback this week. The magazine raves: “MORE THAN ENOUGH is a genre-bending book that combines autobiographical stories, career advice and philosophical reflections into the story of how Welteroth found her voice and her freedom—and how we can do the same.” Penguin Books published the book on April 28, 2020.
Bradley Garrett published an article with The Atlantic titled “We Should All Be Preppers.” He writes: “Preppers all over the world have been hunkered down safely at home or in their bunkers during the COVID-19 pandemic. For them, long-term food storage is a baseline, so making it through a season or two without venturing out is primarily a psychological challenge.” Scribner will publish Garrett’s forthcoming book, BUNKER, on August 4, 2020.
Rutger Bregman’s article “The Moment to Change the World is Right Now” was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine. Bregman writes: “In a time of extraordinary challenges, when COVID-19 seems like just the prequel to the global climate crisis, we need to assume the best in one another. As a historian, I can’t say I’m optimistic, but I am hopeful, because hope impels us to act.” Little, Brown and Company will publish Bregman’s forthcoming book, HUMANKIND, on June 2, 2020.
The Tablet calls Benjamin R. Teitelbaum’s WAR FOR ETERNITY, which is an inside look at Steve Bannon's entourage of global power brokers, an “alarming book, with a terrible, pertinent relevance,” adding that “this author has produced a book to make us tremble.” Dey Street Books published the book on April 21, 2020.
DRIFTS by Kate Zambreno is on Entertainment Weekly’s “20 New Books for May,” Fast Company’s “97 Pop-Culture Musts for May,” and The Millions’ “Most Anticipated Books of May.” Seija Rankin and David Canfield from EW write: “This feverish account of artistic isolation can be read as both a how-to manual and a chilling warning about the dangers of walling yourself off.” BOMB Magazine also hosted Zambreno for an online evening in conversation with Amina Cain, the author of INDELICACY. The two writers discussed their novels and answered audience questions. Riverhead Books will publish DRIFTS on May 19, 2020.
Stephanie Thornton Plymale’s memoir AMERICAN DAUGHTER was reviewed in the New York Times Book Review. Mary Beth Keane writes: “[Thornton Plymale’s] lineage . . . represents a sort of inverse American dream . . . It’s a story of redemption and forgiveness.” River Grove Books published the book on February 3, 2020.
As part of her digital book tour, author Jessica Pearce Rotondi appeared on the Debutiful podcast to discuss the 10-year-long research project into a missing uncle that became her first book, WHAT WE INHERIT. Unnamed Press published the book on April 21, 2020.
Publishers Weekly ran a fantastic interview with former Wu-Tang Clan manager and music executive Sophia Chang. Chang discussed her memoir, THE BADDEST BITCH IN THE ROOM, which was originally released as an Audible Original and will be published in print this September. When asked what inspired her to write this book, Chang replied, “I want to be of service to others. I hope this book is helpful to those who have been afraid to tell their stories or raise their voices, people who feel they’ve been undervalued.” Chang was also featured in the latest episode of Defining Moments with OZY on Hulu, where she discussed her upbringing as the child of Korean immigrants in Canada, her love affair with the New York hip-hop scene, and her experiences as a working single mother. Catapult will publish the book on September 8, 2020.
