EVERYBODY by Olivia Laing published this week, accompanied by generous critical praise. In other words, she is among the most significant voices of our time.” Meanwhile, Dazed praises the collection for “[tackling] the vast complexity and precarity of inhabiting a body in a culture where certain bodies are deemed more valuable than others,” while The Boston Globe raves: “Dreaming beyond conventional wisdom and restrictive visions, Laing emboldens us to seek liberation across difference in the face of turmoil. EVERYBODY is a galvanizing book during a time of incredible hesitation.” Laing also sat down with The New York Times’ Book Review to discuss her book collection and reading habits for their By the Book column. The book was named one of CrimeReads’ “Seven Debut Novels You Should Read This Month,” and Johnstone sat down for a Q&A with the Nerd Daily, where she self-describes her novel as a “gothic psychological thriller about love and betrayal, redemption and revenge, the power of imagination and the price of freedom.” The New York Times also featured MIRRORLAND on their list of recommended thrillers, writing: “In this unsettling, labyrinthine tale, it is hard at first to tell who the villain is — or even how many villains there are in a family with a great deal to hide. The book unlocks its mysteries slowly, twisting the knife a little deeper with each revelation.” Scribner published the novel on April 20, 2021.
