The Financial Times, Mirror, and Channel 4 News are reporting the story behind the landing of British Airways Flight 149 in Kuwait City on the cusp of Iraq’s invasion, as exposed at length in Stephen Davis’s new book, OPERATION TROJAN HORSE. OPERATION TROJAN HORSE published July 22nd from Bonnier Books in the UK. It will publish September 7th in the US as FLIGHT 149 from PublicAffairs Books.

NEON IN DAYLIGHT author Hermione Hoby’s newest novel, VIRTUE, published this week to a cascade of excellent coverage. On publication day, an excerpt from the novel ran alongside a glowing review in the New York Times Book Review, which called VIRTUE “intense and addictive” and praises Hoby’s “penetrating observations” and “stunning visuals.” The reviewer adds: “With a touch as light as a single match, Hoby scorches the earth beneath hollow social activism and performative outrage among young, coastal liberals.” The novel was also named a best book by The Millions, Vanity Fair, Bustle, and Literary Hub, and Hoby sat down for an interview with Vol. 1 Brooklyn to discuss her book. Riverhead Books published the novel on July 20, 2021.

CHINA ROOM by Sunjeev Sahota received a flurry of praise on the day of its release. Ploughshares deems the book a "deeply captivating and necessary novel,” while USA Today rates it 3½ out of four stars, writing: “Sahota has powerfully imagined a life under extreme constraint…a reminder that freedom is hard-won, but fear and anxiety can get passed down as heirlooms.” The book was also chosen as a Book of the Month pick, where author Tessa Hadley raves: “The material [in CHINA ROOM] was entirely fresh and new, the writing economical and elegant. And – what a compelling story.” Viking published the novel on July 13, 2021.

Kendra Allen’s debut poetry collection, THE COLLECTION PLATE, launched this week to a flurry of wonderful coverage. Literary Hub featured a poem from the collection on its website the day before publication, and Allen sat down with Skye Jackson for an interview in Electric Literature. As part of her virtual book tour, Allen will be hosting events in conversation with Kiese Laymon, Jason Reynolds, Sanderia Faye, and Brown Girl Collective, among others. Ecco published THE COLLECTION PLATE on July 6, 2021.

Kirkus heralds it as “[a] small book about small things that becomes a big book about everything,” and Booklist deems it “a delicious meditation on morality, nostalgia, and art” that “lambasts insincere compassion with nuance.” The novel has also been named a best book of the summer by Refinery29, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, Thrillist, and other outlets. Riverhead will publish it on July 20, 2021.

FLIGHT 149 received a glowing review from Publishers Weekly, who write, “Journalist Davis debuts with a doggedly researched chronicle of an obscure yet consequential episode in the Gulf War… Davis provides plenty of support for his allegations, and movingly documents the psychological impact of the hostages’ ordeal. This investigation rings true.” FLIGHT 149 publishes from PublicAffairs on September 7, 2021.

The revised edition of Kiese Laymon’s critically acclaimed first novel, LONG DIVISION, published this week to a flurry of positive press. The New York Times featured the book on its list of “New and Noteworthy” titles, praising the way the book “probes fame, creativity, and the toll of racism.” Meanwhile, in a review for the Chicago Tribune, author John Warner writes: “It is rare that I will purchase a second copy of a book that I already own and have read more than once, but I am making an exception with the recently revised and re-issued edition of Kiese Laymon’s LONG DIVISION…Laymon is a singular voice in American literature.” The book has also been featured on must-read lists for June from Bustle, Entertainment Weekly, and LitHub. Scribner published LONG DIVISION on June 1, 2021.

Canzano notes: “Branch wrote beautifully in the book about the people, places, and circumstances that provide uplifting, powerful, and occasionally tragic outcomes…The interview is well worth your time.” W.W. Norton & Company published the book on June 1, 2021.

Tattered Cover will be hosting a virtual launch event on June 7th at 6:30pm MT for John Branch’s SIDECOUNTRY. The book was also featured on Apple Books' list of most-anticipated books for this summer. W.W. Norton & Company will publish the book on June 1, 2021.

Alex McElroy’s debut novel, THE ATMOSPHERIANS, launched this week to much fanfare. The A.V. Club offered a glowing review, calling the novel “bold, mischievous, and brilliant,” and McElroy sat down for interviews with BOMB Magazine and The Rumpus to discuss their process in crafting their first book. McElroy also published original pieces in BuzzFeed and Literary Hub, and has essays forthcoming in Esquire, Vulture, The Atlantic, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, and The Cut. McElroy’s virtual book tour includes events with Kristin Arnett, T Kira Madden, Alex Higley, Lauren Oyler, and other amazing fellow authors. Atria Books published the novel on May 18, 2021.
