The PW reviews editors are blogging about some of their favorites and the latest post, written on 10/29/14 by Everett Jones, says “There have been biographies, critical studies, and all kinds of books about John Wayne before—there was even a second one published this year—but I can’t imagine any forthcoming that would supplant what Scott Eyman has done here.”

THE BIG FAT SURPRISE by Nina Teicholz

Nina Teichoz’s THE BIG FAT SURPRISE has been chosen as one of Library Journal’s Best Books of the Year for Consumer Health. Teicholz documents how the low-fat nutrition advice of the past sixty years has amounted to a vast uncontrolled experiment on the entire population, with disastrous consequences for our health. Simon and Schuster published the book on May 13, 2014.

GONE FERAL by Novella Carpenter

Novella Carpenter’s GONE FERAL has been chosen as one of Library Journal’s Best Books of the Year for Memoirs. Carpenter’s memoir recounts her trouble relationship with her father after he goes missing. Penguin Press published the book on June 12, 2014.

GHOST MONTH by Ed Lin

Ed Lin’s GHOST MONTH has been chosen as one of Library Journal’s Best Books of the Year for Mystery. GHOST MONTH tells the story of Jing-nan, a young man who runs a food stand in a bustling Taipei night market. He is shocked to the core when he learns his ex-girlfriend from high school has been murdered. Soho Crime published the book on July 29, 2014.

THE ACCIDENTAL HIGHWAYMAN by Ben Tripp

NPR Books calls THE ACCIDENTAL HIGHWAYMAN “delightfully fun. …Warm, funny and entertaining, The Accidental Highwayman is an enjoyable 18th century pantomime I'd be pleased to revisit.” Tor Teen published the book on October 14, 2014.

PAINTED HORSES by Malcolm Brooks

The San Francisco Chronicle says that PAINTED HORSES, “expertly captures the raw essence of an American West known for its wide-open spaces and unbridled spirit.” PAINTED HORSES tells the story of an inexperienced archaeologist sent to determine the fate of a desolate canyon in the fifties. Grove published the book on August 5, 2014.

THE HOT ZONE by Richard Preston

Richard Preston was interviewed by The New York Times regarding the return of his 1994 book about the Ebola virus to the bestseller list. He also published an article called “The Ebola Wars” in the October 27th issue of The New Yorker about efforts to contain the outbreak. It was also announced that THE HOT ZONE was being turned into a limited TV series by Fox TV studios. The series is to be produced by Lynda Obst & Ridley Scott.

WE LOVE COOKING by Lilly & Audrey Andrews

The 12 year-old twin sisters Lilly & Audrey Andrews appeared on Good Morning LA, Access Hollywood and the Steve Harvey show to promote their cookbook WE LOVE COOKING. Oxmoor House published the book on October 7th, 2014.
