Booklist offers immense praise for David Goodwillie’s KINGS COUNTY. They write: "Goodwillie's setting is vivid and his characters rich, with flashbacks fleshing out their backstories. Those who like literary, character-driven fiction with a strong sense of place . . . will enjoy this coming-of-age story." Simon & Schuster will publish the book on July 28, 2020.
GOLDEN GATES by Conor Dougherty received an enthusiastic review in The Nation. They write: “[GOLDEN GATES] is the latest addition to a slate of books on [the housing crisis] that have come out over the past few years . . . but Dougherty’s is among the first to look squarely at the politics of trying to respond to this disaster . . . GOLDEN GATES helps clarify why we have a housing crisis in the first place.” Penguin Press published the book on February 18, 2020.
Food writer and editor Sanaë Lemoine’s debut novel, THE MARGOT AFFAIR, received a glowing review in the New York Times one week out from its publication. Drawing parallels between the book and the work of Rachel Cusk, Ian McEwan, and Françoise Sagan, critic Sarah Lyall raves: “Even when Margot is at her most misguided, the reader aches for her. Lemoine . . . writes in lush, lyrical prose that perfectly captures the heightened emotion and confusion of being a young woman with a bruised heart and limited experience.” Hogarth will publish the book on June 16, 2020.
AGE LATER by Nir Barzilai received a positive review in Library Journal’s June issue. They call it a “thoughtful take on aging that should be of interest to all concerned with the overlap between health and aging." St. Martin’s Press published the book on June 16, 2020.
Book two of Anthony Ryan’s Seven Swords Series, THE KRAKEN’S TOOTH, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. They write: “Ryan masterfully combines vivid characterization and understated worldbuilding . . . Readers will eagerly await the next in the series.” Subterranean will publish the book on September 30, 2020.
Kirkus calls Bradley Garrett’s BUNKER an “[i]ntriguing and often entertaining reading on a phenomenon that seems timeless,” praising Garrett as “a capable writer with a crisp, detailed, visual quality to his work.” The book provides an inside look at “prepper” communities around the world that are building bunkers for a possible apocalypse. Scribner will publish the book on August 4th, 2020.
HUSH by Dylan Farrow received a positive review in the School Library Journal. They write: “The themes of quarantine and deadly disease in the context of current events are poignant; Farrow deftly demonstrates the power of language and education in the hands of the elite as a means for controlling others through propaganda.” St. Martin’s Publishing Group will publish the book on October 6, 2020.
Jennifer Hofman’s debut novel THE STANDARDIZATION OF DEMORALIZATION PROCEDURES has garnered a starred and boxed review from Publishers Weekly. They call it an “enrapturing debut,” adding: “The novel hovers between genres like a subatomic particle between states. All the more impressive, Hofmann’s exceptional debut never loses sight of the desires, mysteries, and small acts of rebellion that persist within dehumanizing systems.” Little, Brown and Company will publish the book on August 11, 2020.
Lauren Ho’s hilarious debut, LAST TANG STANDING, received its second starred review this week, this time from Bookpage. They rave: “[Ho’s] debut novel is a blast [with a] laugh-out-loud protagonist. LAST TANG STANDING is a near-perfect blend of Crazy Rich Asians and Bridget Jones’s Diary, yet it still feels wholly original.” The novel was also included in summer reading lists from Slate and Frolic. Putnam will publish it on June 9, 2020.
Olivia Laing's new collection of essays, FUNNY WEATHER, received a favorable review from The Washington Post. They write: “Laing’s arts writing is sharp-minded, and her manner is generous toward both subject and reader.” W. W. Norton & Company published the book on May 12, 2020.
