AN IMMENSE WORLD by Ed Yong debuted at #2 on both the Print Hardcover Nonfiction and Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction New York Times Bestsellers lists for the week of July 10, 2022. The book also received a rave review from the Sunday Times in the UK. Reviewer James McConnachie writes: “Ed Yong is a gifted British science writer. His first book, I CONTAIN MULTITUDES, was an infectiously exciting deep-dive into the microbiome — the world of resident microbes hidden inside our bodies. His coverage of Covid for The Atlantic magazine won him a Pulitzer. His new book aims to open our eyes to another unseen world...Yong calls his book a ‘call for humility,’ and it did fill me with a certain awe. But it goes further. Subtly — Yong is never heavy-handed — it prompts a radical rethink about the limits of what we know — what the world is, even. It is quite a book. And, I felt, putting it down, quite a world.” AN IMMENSE WORLD was subsequently featured as The Times’ Book of the Week, where Rhys Blakely provides equally generous praise: “Beautifully written and painstakingly researched, the book is brimming with [fantastic] observations...This is perhaps the highest compliment one can give to Yong: this fantastic book leaves you wondering what else is left to be discovered.” Random House published the book on June 21, 2022.
Carlene Bauer's GIRLS THEY WRITE SONGS ABOUT received a rave review from The New York Times. Molly Young writes: “The evolutionary psychologist and anthropologist Robin Dunbar is fond of the term homophily — ‘love of the same’ — to describe why certain people strike up friendships…The two women of Carlene Bauer’s glittering novel GIRLS THEY WRITE SONGS ABOUT define homophily. Charlotte and Rose are brave and reckless, self-critical and stylish…The novel’s pockets of sentimentality are offset by streaks of viciousness, accurately reflecting how we tend to remember our pasts: happy times bathed in a distorting glow, miserable times diminished and disowned...GIRLS THEY WRITE SONGS ABOUT is a love story about two friends, but it’s also something thornier — a narrative about the cycles of enchantment, disenchantment and re-enchantment that make up a life.” Farrar, Straus and Giroux published the novel on June 21, 2022.
Rebecca Rukeyser sat down for a Q&A with Lit Hub to discuss the themes in her debut novel, THE SEAPLANE ON FINAL APPROACH. Interviewer Tony Tulathimutte writes: “Like her two dads, Davids Cronenberg and Lynch, [Rukeyser’s] always had a knack for details so disgusting they become attractions…but her real talent is much subtler: her ability to coax out the sinister and squeamish side of the seemingly ordinary through close inspection.” Doubleday published the novel on June 7, 2022.
Book Riot featured Kendra Allen’s forthcoming memoir FRUIT PUNCH — which they called a “stunning work of nonfiction” — on its list of “22 More Great New Books to Read in 2022.” Publishers Weekly also included the memoir in a longlist of the most anticipated memoirs of Fall 2022. Ecco will publish the book on August 9, 2022.
Entertainment Weekly published an exclusive cover art reveal and first excerpt of SCHITT’S CREEK writer Monica Heisey’s highly anticipated debut novel, REALLY GOOD, ACTUALLY, on June 22. Calie Schepp of EW writes: “[Heisey] has created a tender yet sharp novel that tells the heartbreaking and hilarious tales of a young woman going through a divorce.” The article also includes a short interview with Heisey in which the author discusses her own experience getting a divorce in her twenties, her decision to switch from TV to novel writing, and more. William Morrow will publish the book on January 17, 2023.
Audible named DELE WEDS DESTINY as one of their top 12 audiobooks of June. Audible Editor Margaret Hargrove writes: “[The] resiliency of female friendship is what drew me to DELE WEDS DESTINY... Narrator Tariye Peterside gives each woman a distinct voice that results in a beautifully vivid and lush performance I couldn’t stop listening to. You’ll laugh, cry, and feel your heart swell as these women rediscover their bonds of friendship and face a shocking crisis right before the big day.” Obaro also sat down with Chicago Magazine to discuss the writing process and inspirations for her novel: “I’ve always been drawn to novels about long-lasting friendships and how they change over time. And I was inspired by the relationship my mom has with her two best friends as well. I also thought it would be fun to structure the book around a wedding but to have the heart of the novel really focus on friendships — as opposed to romantic love, which attracts a disproportionate amount of attention…I really tried to write from a place of empathy for each character, even if the portrayals could seem a little unflattering.”
Knopf publishes the novel on June 28, 2022.
Malala Yousafzai selected Cleyvis Natera’s debut novel NERUDA ON THE PARK as her Literati July 2022 Book Club pick. She writes: “Immigrant families know that ‘home’ can mean something different to everyone, even those living under the same roof. Cleyvis Natera’s debut novel, NERUDA ON THE PARK, explores the sacrifices we make for the people and places we call home. I hope you’ll find this thrilling, beautifully-told debut novel the perfect companion for warm summer nights.” Ballantine Books published the novel on May 24, 2022.
Following the publication of FIGHT LIKE HELL, Kim Kelly was interviewed by various national and regional media outlets, including The Atlantic, The Hill, Alabama’s Valley Labor Report, The Progressive, and Wisconsin’s community radio station, WORT 89.9, as well as Queer Eye star Jonathan van Ness for his podcast, Getting Curious. For SPIN Magazine, Kelly discussed making a name for herself first as a music journalist covering the metal scene and now as a labor reporter covering activist and union movements across the country: “The union was my favorite band…I was spending more time at union meetings than at metal shows. I was learning more about the labor movement, the ins and outs of labor law, and seeing the way that exploitation, inequities and these historic wrongs still impact so many workers today. I was rapidly realizing I’d gone from being a metal journalist with a political view to a political journalist who was really into heavy metal.” One Signal Publishers published FIGHT LIKE HELL on April 26, 2022.
The Los Angeles Times interviewed Colleen Kinder, whose LETTER TO A STRANGER was their May book club pick, praising the “powerful” stories’ potential to “transport you around the world”: “In a season when many pandemic-weary humans are daring to travel again, or at least dreaming of long-delayed adventures, a new book of essays reminds us of the wondrous ways serendipity can strike when we leave familiar surroundings behind.” Algonquin Books published the book on March 22, 2022.
Jordan Castro’s THE NOVELIST received a rave review from Brooklyn Rail. Reviewer Scott Cheshire hails the novel as “[c]ompact, brilliant, and very funny,” adding: “Castro has committed the unlikely act of attending to his art while including its corruption, a tradition all its own, thus making it all the more contemporary and comedic." The book was also featured as one of Vulture’s “17 Books We Can’t Wait to Read This Summer.” Soft Skull published the book on June 14, 2022.
